Blumenthal Statement on Vote Against Republican Bill That Would Cut Funds for Local Law Enforcement, Put Community Safety at Risk

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) issued the following statement on his vote against the Stop Sanctuary Policies and Protect Americans Act, which Democrats blocked by a vote of 54-45.

I voted against this bill today because it is politically motivated demagoguery that could cost Connecticut millions of dollars in law enforcement funding and valuable cooperation, making our state and nation less safe. It has the potential to deny millions of dollars to law enforcement—resources that are essential to public safety and economic security—in a misguided effort to punish states like Connecticut for trying to build trust between police and the communities they serve. I will continue to fight for fundamental and far-reaching immigration reform to address the underlying defects of the current system.
