Blumenthal Statement on For-Profit Chain EDMC Settlement over Allegations of Deceptive Recruiting Practices

(Hartford, CT) – U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) issued the following statement today on the settlement reached with for-profit college chain Education Management Corp. (EDMC) regarding allegations of deceptive recruiting practices:

This case has uncovered shocking evidence of fraudulent behavior – recruiters who lured unwitting students into taking out massive student loans were rewarded with all-expenses-paid vacations to Mexico. These predatory recruiting tactics have caused serious harm to many former EDMC students – including student veterans using the Post-9/11 GI Bill – many of whom have accumulated enormous amounts of student debt as a result. Though this settlement does provide limited debt forgiveness for some affected students, the Department of Education should use all of its authority to provide comprehensive loan forgiveness to affected students, as it has begun to do for former Corinthian College students. I urge the Department of Education to continue cracking down on the bad actors in the for-profit industry that shamelessly prey on our young people seeking an education.”
