Blumenthal Statement On DOT Emergency Order Requiring Stricter Standards To Transport Crude Oil By Rail

(Washington, DC) – Today, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) issued a statement in response to an emergency order issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) that will require all shippers of crude oil to ensure that the product is properly tested and classified in accordance with federal safety regulations. The emergency order also requires that crude oil shipments be designated as Packing Group I or II, thereby requiring the use of a more robust tank car.

“Stronger, stricter safety standards for shipping crude oil are necessary to keep families and communities along rail lines out of harm’s way,” Blumenthal said. “In light of recent accidents in North Dakota and Lac-Mégantic, such efforts by DOT are welcome. I will continue to closely monitor the industry’s growth and the current situation on the ground to determine what federal legislation may be required to prevent even more tragedies from occurring. Additional safety steps should be taken. Dangers will only be aggravated by the lack of more aggressive action to protect safety.”
