Blumenthal Statement on Department of Education Actions to Increase Oversight of ITT Tech

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) released the following statement today after the Department of Education announced it would place additional restrictions on ITT Educational Services, Inc. (ITT Tech) and increase oversight to protect students and taxpayers. Today, the Department announced that ITT Tech will no longer be allowed to enroll new students with federal aid, it must notify current students that the institution is not in compliance with accreditor standards, and it will be required to pay an additional $150 million to the Department to cover potential losses to taxpayers.‎‎

“I applaud the Department of Education and Secretary King for halting the flow of federal student aid dollars for new students to ITT Tech. This is a strong step that will protect students and taxpayers from a bad actor that has cheated the system for far too long. This action should put the entire for-profit college industry on notice: the exploitation of taxpayers and the deception of students has no place in our higher education system.”
