Blumenthal Statement on 100th Anniversary of the Sinking of the Titanic

(Hartford, CT) – Today, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) issued the following statement in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the tragic sinking of the Titanic. Mystic Aquarium’s newest exhibit “Titanic-12,450 Feet Below”, created by Dr. Robert Ballard, Connecticut resident who discovered the Titanic ruins in 1985, and Tim Delaney, former Walt Disney Imagineer and owner of Tim J. Delaney Design, marks the 100th anniversary of the maiden voyage and loss of the Titanic.

"On this 100th anniversary of the Titanic's tragic loss, we must redouble our efforts to preserve its legacy – protecting its remains from exploitative raids.  I will continue fighting for federal legislation to protect the site, and federal funding to support the profoundly valuable research by scientific leaders like Robert Ballard in Connecticut. Dr. Ballard’s leadership in sea research, his discovery of the Titanic’s ruins 27 years ago, and his continued exploration of the ocean, have contributed a great deal to our understanding of the world’s natural, scientific, and cultural resources. His newest exhibit is a reminder that we must continue to invest in ocean exploration, which supports the vital research missions conducted by the Connecticut Sea Research Foundation.
