Blumenthal Slams Trump Administration Proposal to Reinstate Global Gag Rule

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Today, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal slammed President Trump’s Executive Order to reinstate the Global Gag Rule, also known as the Mexico City Policy. The Global Gag Rule bans federal funds for non-governmental organizations that provide abortion services or information about abortion as part of family planning services, forcing clinics to choose between providing limited reproductive health services while accepting U.S. funds or offering comprehensive family planning and reproductive health care with a limited budget.

“Reinstating this radically restrictive rule means reverting to offensive violations of human rights and constraints on women’s health care. The inevitable effect will be to inhibit full participation by women in the global economy,” Blumenthal said. “Whatever President Trump may have claimed previously about valuing women’s rights, this decision speaks volumes and confirms our worst fears about his Administration’s assault on women’s health care. Encouraged and energized by the marches this weekend – when millions of people supported core values like women’s health care – I will continue to fight such atrocious actions.”

Tomorrow, Blumenthal will join U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) in re-introducing bipartisan legislation that would permanently repeal the Global Gag Rule.
