(Washington, DC) – Senator Blumenthal (D-CT) today called for full funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Disaster Relief Fund, citing the families, small business owners, and farmers he has met with whose lives and livelihoods have been devastated in the wake of Hurricane Irene, and who continue to rely on critical FEMA funding as they work to rebuild their communities.

Blumenthal said, “Turning disaster assistance into a political football is unacceptable and unconscionable – it is a recipe for gridlock and it’s just plain wrong. It’s wrong, and a disservice to the men and women whose homes and business have been hit by the forces of nature that are unpredictable and unpreventable, and now they are attempting to rebuild their lives and we owe it to them to match their courage and resilience with efforts from FEMA.”

Blumenthal has previously called for Connecticut to receive its fair share of emergency resources and federal disaster relief funding after surveying damage and meeting with local and state officials from the Connecticut shoreline, Housatonic River Valley, and across the state.
