Blumenthal, Murphy Statement on Republicans’ Refusal to Close ‘Terror Gap,’ Prevent People on Terrorist Watch List from Purchasing Guns

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) issued the following statement after Senate Republicans blocked consideration of the Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2015, which would prevent individuals on the FBI’s Terrorist Watch List from purchasing guns:

We are disappointed that Republicans blocked a commonsense, straightforward measure to keep lethal weapons out of the hands of dangerous people. If you are too dangerous to fly, you are too dangerous to buy a gun. The overwhelming majority of Americans – and American gun owners – support this necessary action to stop suspected terrorists from purchasing firearms. People who are wrongly implicated have an opportunity to challenge the determination in court. But if the Attorney General has determined that a person is a suspected terrorist, that person should not be able to walk out of a store with a gun.”
